History: | Named in 1789 by Captain Nathaniel Portlock, for himself. His ship was anchored in this harbor August 6-23 in 1787 (Wagner, 1935, p. 403). He published a sketch of the harbor in 1789 (p. 258). Lieutenant Commander H.E. Nichols, U.S. Navy (USN), regards the harbor the same as Kuk-kan of the Tlingit Indians U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (1891, p. 189). |
